Protect Your Personal Information
Protect Your Personal Information
Protecting your personal information is a big responsibility and as scammers become more advanced it may seem overwhelming at times. It’s important to know what tools and materials are available to keep you informed and educated. The below Personal Identity Checklist is a good starting point to understand what resources you have and how you can be the best line of defense against fraudsters.
Update Your Contact Information
Keep your contact information with your bank or credit union up-to-date. Make sure that your email, cell phone number and contact information is current. If fraudulent or suspicious activity is detected on your account you’ll want to be sure your bank or credit union can notify you as quickly as possible.
Activate Alerts
When you enroll in Online/Mobile Banking, you can activate different types of account alerts. Get notifications sent right to your smart phone if your balance falls below a specific amount or when your debit and credit cards are used to make a purchase. You can also set alerts if an incorrect username or password is submitted at login. Learn more about the different types of alerts that are available within PFFCU Online/Mobile Banking.
Set Strong Passwords
Using a password that is more than eight characters and that is a mix of letters, numbers, and special characters makes it more difficult for hackers to gain access to your accounts. Don’t use the same password for everything and never share your password with anyone. As a reminder, we’ll never call, email or text you asking for you to share your passwords or PINs.
Stay Educated
Know the signs of a scam before it’s too late. Stay current on the new ways that fraudsters are trying to steal your personal information. Being able to spot the signs of a scam can help you from becoming a victim. Check out the fraud section of our blog to learn about recent check scams, phishing scams and more.
Keep Devices Updated
Keep your computer and smart phone updated with the most current software and operating systems to better protect yourself and your information. These updates can help eliminate any flaws that allow hackers to view and steal your information.
Know Who Knows You
Before you click download on any new app, do some research to see how that app shares your data. Be sure to only download from official apps stores and read the app’s privacy policy to learn how your information will be shared. If the policy is vague or you don’t understand, you may want to consider finding a different app to download.
